Sports by the numbers – April 11

WINONA, Minn. — It’s Monday morning, and time to take one final look back at the highlights of the week that was—by the numbers.

1: Ashley Betzold (Farmington, Minn.) launched her first home run of the season in the Cardinal fastpitch team’s 5-1 loss to No. 20 St. Thomas last Sunday.

1: Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Minn.) blew away the rest of the 42-man field in winning the 5,000 with a time of 15:07.74, and highlighting the Cardinal track and field team’s efforts at the UW-La Crosse Ashton May Invitational last Saturday.

2 + 2+ 4 = W: Steph Scatassa (Westchester, Wis.) limited Saint John’s to just two runs on two hits in six innings, and Nathan Mathwig (Woodbury, Minn.) worked a perfect seventh for his team-leading fourth save, as the Cardinal baseball team beat the Johnnies 5-2 in Game 1 of their MIAC doubleheader last Sunday.

2 = 7: Tyler Lursen (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished with seven RBIs in the Cardinal baseball team’s MIAC split against Saint John’s last Sunday, as the senior belted two home runs—a three-run, first-inning shot in Game 1 and his first collegiate grand slam in his final at-bat in Game 2.

3: The Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team picked up its third 9-0 victory of the season last Thursday, sweeping past North Central in its final nonconference match of the year.

3/6: Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.) and Maria Missurelli (Franklin, Wis.) enjoyed banner days for the Cardinal track and field teams at the UW-La Crosse Ashton May Invitational last Saturday, as Dennis collected a third-place showing in the 400, clocking a time of 48.61, before adding a fifth-place time of 22.47 in the 200, while Missurelli cleared 3.40 meters en route to her sixth-place showing in the pole vault.

4-4: Ashley Betzold (Farmington, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate four-hit game for the Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball—going 4-for-4 in Game 2 against Saint Benedict last Wednesday.

5: Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) recorded his second five-RBI game in the Cardinal baseball team’s 10-7 come-from-behind win over Gustavus last Wednesday. Kinne belted a two-run triple—his first collegiate triple—in the second and added a three-run home run in Saint Mary’s four-run seventh.

6: Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) pushed her singles winning streak to six in a row with her straight-set win at No. 3 in the Cardinal women’s tennis team’s 9-0 win over UW-River Falls last Wednesday.

9: All nine starters collected at least one hit for the Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball team in its 9-5 Game 1 win over Saint Benedict last Wednesday. Stanzy Snyder (Johnston, Iowa) and Toni Hunsinger (Farmington, Minn.) led the way with two hits each.

10: Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) picked up her ninth singles win of the season in the Cardinal women’s tennis team’s loss to St. Olaf last Saturday, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5.

10: The Saint Mary’s baseball team’s 10 runs in its 10-7 Game 1 win over Gustavus last Wednesday marked the fifth time this season the Cardinals have scored 10 or more runs.

11: Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) collected his team-leading 11th multiple-hit game, going 3-for-3—including doubles in his first two at-bats—in helping the Cardinal baseball team to a 5-2 win over Saint John’s in the opener of their MIAC doubleheader last Sunday.

13: Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) collected their team-leading 13th doubles win for the Cardinal men’s tennis team in last Saturday’s conference loss to St. Olaf, earning an 8-4 victory at No. 2.

13/24: Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) collected hits in both games of the Cardinal baseball team’s MIAC doubleheader against Saint John’s last Sunday, pushing his hitting streak to 13. Buerkle has now reached base safely in all 24 games this season.

15: The Cardinal men’s tennis team dropped just 15 games in its 9-0 nonconference win over North Central (Minn.) last Thursday. Saint Mary’s won the three doubles matches 8-2, 8-2, and 8-0, and lost just 11 games in rolling to six, straight-set singles wins.

81: Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) and David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) each carded team-best 81s for the Saint Mary’s men’s golf team during the second day of the 36-hole Augsburg Spring Invitational. Jackson opened the tournament with an 82 to finish with a team-best 163 total.

91: Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) kicked off her Saint Mary’s women’s golf spring season with an opening-round team-best 91 at the Augsburg Spring Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minn. Kling added a second-day 96 for a team-low 187 two-day total.
