WINONA, Minn. — It’s Monday morning, and time to take one final look back at the highlights of the week that was—by the numbers.

1: The Saint Mary’s baseball team’s nonconference game against the University of Minnesota last Wednesday marked the first time in program history the Cardinals have squared off against the NCAA Division I Gophers.

1: Mariah Harper (Schaumburg, Ill.) hit her first collegiate home run against No. 7 Luther last Tuesday, blasting a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 2.

2: James Davis (Dallas, Texas) collected a pair of first-place finishes—winning both the 100 (11.09) and 200 (22.56)—to lead the way for the Cardinal track and field teams at the Dingels/Brueggen Open last Sunday.

2: Brittney Birkhauser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) launched her team-leading second home run of the season in the first game of the Cardinal fastpitch softball team’s MIAC doubleheader against No. 18 St. Catherine last Sunday.

2+2=4: The Cardinal baseball team finished with four hits in its nonconference loss to the University of Minnesota last Wednesday—two from Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) and two from Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.).

3-3: Cale Pieczynski (Plover, Wis.) went 3-for-3 in the first game of the Cardinal baseball team’s doubleheader against UW-La Crosse last Tuesday. It was the second multiple-hit game of the season for the Cardinal senior.

4: Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) collected a team-leading four hits in the Cardinal baseball team’s doubleheader against No. 21 St. Thomas last Sunday. Doll went 1-for-3 in the opener, and 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

4×2: Brittney Birkhauser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) went 2-for-4 in both games for the Cardinal fastpitch softball team against No. 18 St. Catherine last Sunday. The Cardinal sophomore also drove in four of the team’s six runs—three on a fourth-inning home run and the other on a game-winning RBI double in the sixth—in Saint Mary’s 6-5 Game 1 win against the Wildcats.

5: The Saint Mary’s baseball team played five games last week, four against nationally ranked teams—No. 18 UW-La Crosse and No. 21 St. Thomas—while the other contest was against NCAA Division I University of Minnesota.

5: Ashley Betzold (Farmington, Minn.) and Mariah Harper (Schaumburg, Ill.) accounted for five of the Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball team’s seven hits in the Cardinals nonconference doubleheader against seventh-ranked Luther last Tuesday. Betzold went 3-for-4 in the opener, while Harper went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.

5: Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) pushed her singles winning streak to five in a row with victories in the Cardinal women’s tennis teams matches against Bethel, UW-Stevens Point, and St. Norbert last weekend. With her three wins, Vandenberg moved into a tie for the team lead in dual-match singles win (9) with Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.).

7: The Cardinal men’s and women’s track and field teams picked up seven first-place finishes at the outdoor season-opening Dingels/Brueggen Open last Sunday.

9: Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) recorded his team-leading ninth multiple-hit game for the Saint Mary’s baseball team against St. Thomas last Sunday, going 3-for-4.

35-2: The Cardinal fastpitch softball team’s two doubleheaders last week were both against nationally ranked teams—No. 7 Luther last Wednesday and No. 18 St. Catherine last Sunday. The Norse and Wildcats have a combined 35-2 overall record.
