The Saint Mary’s Swimming and Diving program hosted its annual Alumni Open in the Jul Gernes pool on Saturday, Jan. 23.
“This is one of the meets that all of us [swimmers] look forward to because we get to see and swim with the alumni,” senior captain Christina Weldai said. “It is really great to see the current team swimming against the graduates. Our program has always been a family no matter if you are a new freshman or an alumnus.”

The events at this meet were not typical. They were much shorter, meant for the alumni who are not in the same shape as the current athletes. However, there were still some events that had not changed over time, such as the 200 individual medley. The university record holder in that event, Mark Ross (’13), had the opportunity to return to that same event.
“It was great getting back in the water and swimming familiar races with familiar faces,” said Ross.
By default, the alumni won the meet. The current Cardinals raced in different events than they usually do, giving them the chance to mix up their meet lineups and experience something different from what they usually do meet after meet.
The current varsity Cardinals return to competition this Saturday, Jan. 30, for the women’s dual meet against Augsburg at 1 p.m.
