WINONA, Minn. — It’s time to take one final look back at the highlights of the week that was—by the numbers.

1: Maria Missurellii (Franklin, Wis.) was the top finisher for the Cardinal women’s track and field team at last Saturday’s Cardinal Early Birdinal, clearing 2.76 meters in winning the pole vault.

2: The Cardinal women’s basketball team’s two losses this season have both come against nationally ranked foes—No. 14 UW-Stevens Point and No. 19 St. Thomas

3: Aaron Romportl (Stillwater, Minn.), Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn.), and Quashingm Smith-Pugh (St. Paul, Minn.) all scored in double figures for the second straight game last Saturday against St. Thomas. Romportl netted a team-best 11 points vs. the nationally ranked Tommies, while Ferron and Smith-Pugh each chipped in 10.

4: The Cardinal women’s hockey team’s games against St. Thomas last weekend marked the third and fourth straight games against teams ranked in the Top 5 of the latest USCHO.com national poll. Along with their two conference contests vs. No. 4 St. Thomas, Saint Mary’s dropped 2-1 and 4-2 decisions to third-ranked Lake Forest the previous weekend.

4: The Saint Mary’s men’s track and field team collected four first-place finishes at the Cardinal Early Birdinal last Saturday. Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) posted a leap of 6.61 meters in winning the long jump, then added a 13.68-meter jump in the triple jump to pick up his second win of the day. Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.)—an NCAA Division III outdoor national qualifier a year ago—added a first-place time of 51.46 in the 400, while James Davis (Dallas, Texas) won the 55, stopping the clock in 6.73.

5: The Cardinal men’s hockey team’s five goals in their losses to UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout last weekend came from five different players. Martin Gruse (Trenton, Mich.) and Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.) scored the Cardinals’ two goals in last Friday’s 6-2 loss to UW-Stevens Point, while Dylan Dock (River Falls, Wis.), Jay Heinle (York, Pa.), and Jonathon Elliot (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) found the back of the net against UW-Stout a day later.

5: Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) collected a pair of top 5 finishes—placing second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 breaststroke—to spark the Cardinal women’s swimming and diving team at the Luther Sprint Invitational last Saturday. VanBeest stopped the clock in 1:13.20 in the 100 breaststroke en route to her second finish in the 100 breaststroke, while touching the wall in 33.96 to place fourth in the 50 breaststroke.

9: Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) scored her team-leading ninth goal in the Cardinal women’s hockey team’s 3-1 loss to fourth-ranked St. Thomas last Saturday. Henderson, who has scored seven goals in the Cardinals’ last 10 games, owns 15 career goals in her two seasons as a Cardinal.

10: Joe Tonda‘s (St. Paul, Minn.) seventh-place showing in the 100 breaststroke and top 10 efforts from Lucas Gerads(St. Cloud, Minn.) and Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) led the way for the Cardinal men’s swimming and diving team at the Luther Sprint Invitational last Saturday. Tonda posted a time of 1:06.41 in placing seventh in the 100 breaststroke, while Gerads raced to a time of 58.23 to finish eighth in the 50 breaststroke and Mockler chipped in a ninth-place time of 31.02 in the 50 breaststroke.

11: Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn.) matched his career-best with 11 rebounds for the Cardinal men’s basketball team in their conference loss to Bethel last Monday.

13: After not scoring a goal during his freshman season a year ago, Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) netted his team-leading  13th of the season in the Cardinal men’s hockey team’s loss to UW-Stout last Saturday.

14: Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) hauled in a team- and game-high 14 rebounds for the Cardinal women’s basketball team in its 61-55 win over Concordia last Wednesday. The freshman and reigning MIAC Athlete of the Week, also tossed in a team-best 17 points en route to her fifth double-double of the season.

14, 10: Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn.) chipped in 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in the Cardinal men’s basketball team’s loss to Concordia last Wednesday—it was his first double-double of the season and second of his collegiate career.

15: Aaron Romportl (Stillwater, Minn.) scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Cardinal men’s basketball team in scoring in their loss to Concordia last Wednesday.

17 x 2 = 3: Bridget Pethke (New London, Wis.) and Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) each scored 17 points in leading the Cardinal women’s basketball team to a 61-55 win over Concordia last Wednesday. It was the Cardinals’ third straight win over the Cobbers.

21: Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) scored a season-high 21 points in the Cardinal men’s basketball team’s loss to Bethel last Monday. The 21-point effort marked the seventh time in his collegiate career that Swiggum has eclipsed the 20-point barrier.

24: Micaela Meredith (Bloomington, Minn.) scored a team-, game-, and career-high 24 points for the Cardinal women’s basketball team in their loss to No. 19 St. Thomas last Saturday. Meredith’s 24-point effort against the Tommies marked the fourth time this season the senior has netted 20 or more points in a game.
