With a new season, new coach and facilities under renovation, the men’s and women’s golf teams ended their seasons successfully, according to head coach Greg Moore.
This season, the golf teams ended with a 10th place finish in the MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). “I think we made steps in the right direction,” said Moore. Although none of the players qualified to play in the NCAA tournament in the spring, the Cardinals have proven to be a competitive team in the MIAC.

This year the golf teams will be graduating four seniors: Connor Brandt, Thomas Garside, Haley Jung and Blake Westerberg. Brandt finished this season with a strong career average of 86.51 over three years of playing Cardinal golf. Although Garside never had the opportunity to play in the men’s line-up, Moore said he worked hard in practice and served as a great ambassador for the program. Jung finished her senior season by placing third in the Luther Invitational, ending with a season average of 90.58, dropping 10 strokes since her freshman year. Highlighting his senior year, Westerberg finished the MIAC tournament by carding his third 79; another highlight was taking first in the Midwest Region Classic.

As for incoming talent, Saint Mary’s has not confirmed any new Cardinal golfers. “No recruits that have committed, but definitely a couple people in the works, so in a couple months we should have an idea,” said Moore. Between both teams there will be 16 returners (eight each) in the fall of 2016.
One of the unused racquetball courts is currently being renovated into an indoor practice and storage facility for the golf teams. Until the renovations are complete, the team has nets and hitting stations set up to practice with during the off-season and has plans to repaint and install lockers, according to Moore.

The opening date of the golf spring season is to be determined based on weather and tournament schedules.
