The SMUMN men’s soccer team was back in action at Ochrymowycz Field last Tuesday as they took on MIAC opponent Gustavus Adolphus College. The Gusties came out swinging, displaying a fast-paced, multi-pronged attack. However, the Cardinals hung with them defensively in a gritty battle to the finish after a grueling 110 minutes of soccer.

The Cardinals’ best scoring chance of the game came midway through the first 10 minute overtime period in a scrum in front of the net. Jared Wolt (So.) was able to misdirect the ball with his head right in front of the Gustavus keeper. Amid gasps from the crowd, the ball ricocheted off the post and ended up out of bounds. Similar close calls increased in volume as the clock inched toward zero, but neither team was able to find the decisive goal and the hard-fought battle ended in a tie.
The Cardinals are back on home turf on Saturday, Oct. 10, as they take on Hamline University at 7 p.m.
