On a muggy night following this week’s rainstorms, the men’s soccer team hosted the Augsburg Auggies in their conference opener last Wednesday, Sept. 16. The hometown boys fought valiantly in what turned out to be a long defensive struggle, but Augsburg’s early second-half goal was the difference in the Cardinals’ 0-1 loss.

The match was heated and gritty; players nearly came to blows when both sides expressed physicality several times after the ball was dead. Senior Cody Balogh nearly put the Cardinals on the board in the first half with a quick sliding shot that went just wide of the goal. But in a scrum at 30 minutes left on the clock, the home team found the ball in the back of their own net, and the Cardinals were not able to equalize despite hard work up until the buzzer.

The Cardinals are back in MIAC conference action on Saturday, Sept. 19 in St. Cloud, traveling with the women’s soccer team as they take on St. John’s University. The Cardinals’ next home game is Saturday, Sept. 26 against Bethel University at 1:00 p.m.
