The Cardinal athletes are back and stronger than ever!

The 2015 fall sports season is already in full swing at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota- Winona campus. Various fall teams, such as Golf, Volleyball, Soccer, and Cross Country are already preparing physically and mentally for upcoming games.

Athletes Haley Jung (Golf) and Jovan Newsum (Cross Country) are excited to be back on campus. They have been working hard to prepare for what’s ahead of them. Both athletes stress the importance of training in the off season.

“I try to get out and golf as much as I can in the off season,” said Jung. “It is important to get some work on the range.”

Practices are intense and players already have the right mindset by creating fierce goals personally and communally.

“We are a small team, but small does not necessarily mean bad,” said Newsum. “It just gives more opportunities to bond and build chemistry.”

The energy is already flowing for the teams.

“As the competitive season approaches, I am most excited not only watching my game improve, but the rest of my team as well,” said Jung.

Being an athlete, Newsum has great tips on staying in shape.

“Have fun with runs, biking, lifting, etc. Just do not make workouts become a hassle.”

It can be tough to create a habit alone, but Newsum states, “It is fun to communicate with someone other than yourself on a ten-mile run.”

Stay tuned for upcoming games, important dates, and times you can be a part of cheering on the Cardinals. Both women’s and men’s golf teams have their first match on Sept. 1 at The Jewell Golf Course in Lake City. The Cross Country Alumni Open is on Sept. 5 at home.
